What began as a vibrant eye-catcher at our trade fair booth in Munich has now taken on a new life – full of purpose and imagination.
We decided to pass the colorful yarn cones on to places where they could spark creativity and provide real educational value: kindergartens, schools, and inventive hands. At SETEX, we believe that small, thoughtful actions can lead to meaningful change – especially when creativity meets purpose.
A Key Role: catholic kindergarten in Mengerskirchen.
We owe special thanks to Ms. Claudia Wiegmann, head of the catholic kindergarten in Mengerskirchen. Not only did she integrate the yarn cones into her own facility’s educational activities – she also took the initiative to distribute them further: to nearby kindergartens, primary schools, church workers, and families.
“When we receive something this valuable, I make sure it doesn’t end up gathering dust – it should be used and enjoyed,” she told us.
More than Craft Supplies: Learning Through Creativity
What looks like ordinary craft material unfolds extraordinary educational value.
“The yarn cones promote fine motor skills, curiosity, and imagination,” Wiegmann explains. One activity in particular – string art, where children stretch threads between nails – trains more than the hand:
“When children reach across the body's midline with their hands, it activates both hemispheres of the brain. That kind of movement supports bilateral coordination and strengthens cognitive development.”
The children are free to explore the cones on their own. They untangle threads, sort colors, feel textures, and invent new uses – even transforming the empty cones into colorful vases. The vivid colors and textile texture captivate the senses and spark creative thinking – a rare and exciting experience in everyday kindergarten life.
Whether used for string art, textile experiments, or free play – these yarn cones have taken on a new purpose in the hands of children. And that’s the idea behind this initiative: giving industrial materials a meaningful second life, through creativity, education, and sustainable action – in line with the values embraced in the EU Green Deal.
